Choose the right circuit
Tanzania’s Northern Circuit — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara — is the most iconic and the best choice for a first visit. It packs an extraordinary density of wildlife into a manageable route. If you’d rather avoid the crowds, the Southern Circuit (Mikumi, Udzungwa, Ruaha) offers a wilder, quieter experience. We’ll help you weigh the trade-offs.
What to pack
- Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige) — bright colours and dark blue are best avoided.
- Layers: mornings and evening game drives can be surprisingly cold, afternoons hot.
- A good pair of binoculars — this single item transforms the experience.
- Sun protection: wide-brim hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen.
- A camera with a zoom lens, plenty of memory, and a spare battery.
- Any personal medication, plus insect repellent.
A typical day on safari
Days usually begin early — the light is beautiful and the animals are active in the cool hours. After a morning game drive you’ll return for breakfast or carry a picnic into the park. Midday is for resting, while the afternoon brings a second drive as the heat softens. Evenings are for good food, big skies and swapping stories of what you saw. Your guide reads the bush constantly, and no two days are ever the same.
The best safari moments are the unplanned ones — a leopard easing down a tree at dusk, or a herd crossing the road in front of you. Patience is always rewarded.
