Stone Town is where Modesty Tours calls home, so we may be biased — but we think it’s one of the most atmospheric places in all of East Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a labyrinth of carved doors, winding alleys, spice markets and centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European history layered on top of one another. Here’s how we’d spend a perfect 48 hours.
Day one: history and heritage
Start in the cool of the morning with a guided walk through the old town. Visit the House of Wonders and the Old Fort, then take the sobering, essential tour of the former Slave Market and its memorial — a powerful reminder of the island’s difficult past. Wander the alleys and look up: the famous Zanzibari doors, studded with brass and carved with symbolism, are everywhere.
For lunch, find a rooftop café and try Zanzibari biryani or urojo, the island’s tangy “mix” soup. In the afternoon, browse the Darajani Market, then time your evening for the Forodhani Gardens night market, where the air fills with grilled seafood, Zanzibar pizza and sugarcane juice as the sun sets over the water.
Day two: spice, sea and sunset
No visit is complete without a spice tour — Zanzibar isn’t called the Spice Island for nothing. You’ll see, smell and taste cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla growing, and understand the trade that shaped the island’s fortunes. In the afternoon, take a short boat trip to Prison Island to meet its giant Aldabra tortoises, some over a century old.
As the day cools, return to the water for a traditional dhow cruise at sunset. Watching the old town’s skyline glow gold from the deck of a wooden sailing boat is the memory most travellers carry home.
